Here is something I didn’t get to photograph, because I didn’t have my camera with me:

Today is the Puerto Rican Festival on Graham Avenue.  The loud throng of festival-goers fill the first few blocks past Broadway.  They dance to hip-hop blasted on giant speakers, enthusiastically waving miniature Puerto Rican flags next to the sausage vendors and the pina colada stand.  On the sidewalk next to the crowd there is a butch woman, by herself, smiling even as she shouts at the man harassing her from the doorway of the liquor store.  She says, “I’m Puerto Rican too!” and she holds her own flag up high above her head – a solitary rainbow flag waving stark and  proud amidst all the red and blue.
